Alpine coupe
The Renault Alpine is another resurrection for Renault: the first Alpine was a rear-engined sports car with rallying heritage, while the Alpine GTA of the eighties was one of the most distinctive cars of its era, and a genuine rival to Porsches of the time. With the new Alpine, Renault is seeking to re-establish its sports-car credentials by building a mid-engined model, while the Alpine is likely to be one of the lightest cars in its class, too. This focus on weight-saving should mean the Alpine will have a relatively small engine, yet still be capable of 0-62mph in around 4.5 seconds.
New Alfa Romeo Stelvio
Another Italian SUV, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is a hotly anticipated car and a key model in Alfa’s recent resurgence. It’s based on the excellent Alfa Romeo Giulia so should be pin-sharp to drive, while a 503bhp, 177mph Quadrifoglio model will keep performance fans happy. Most buyers are likely to choose Alfa’s 2.2-litre diesel engine, though, and this is likely to to be offered in a variety of power outputs, while a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol may also feature. The Stelvio will start at around £35,000, with first customer deliveries expected in the latter part of 2017.
The New Abarth 500X
An increasing number of carmakers are spicing the suv formula up with performance models, and the Abarth 500X is one such car. It’s based on the Fiat 500X mini SUV, but the performance specialists at Abarth have fitted it with bigger brakes, sportier alloy wheels and an assertive bodykit. There’s no official word on figures yet, but we expect the Abarth 500X to use a version of Fiat’s 1.4-litre petrol engine, tuned to produce as much as 200bhp. It’s likely to cost around £25,000 when it goes on sale in mid-2017.
Mercedes-Maybach S550 / S600 Price: $192,225
This sumptuous limo is not just a stretched S-class with a Maybach badge—it’s far more lavish than that. The S550's 449-hp 4.7-liter twin-turbo V-8 and the S600's 523-hp, 6.0-liter twin-turbo V-12 provide effortless motivation while passengers enjoy hot-stone-style massaging leather recliners. With a tranquil cabin and a Burmester audio system, it’s a rolling concert hall, too. And forget that new-car smell: the air-filtration system infuses the cabin with the Maybach’s own signature fragrance.

Scion tC
Along with the rest of the Scion brand, the Scion tC model was discontinued in 2016. Under the hood, you’ll find a 179-hp 2.5-liter four; it powers the front wheels through a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. Handling is confident and body motions are well controlled, but its rivals easily outperform it. However, the tC offers a roomy cabin, top-notch build quality, and a good reliability record.
Scion iA
Starting with the 2017 model, the iA lost the badge of the now-defunct Scion brand and became the Toyota Yaris iA. Basically a Mazda 2 underneath the sheetmetal, the iA’s 106-hp 1.5-liter four teams with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. A low-speed pre-collision safety system, Bluetooth connectivity, and 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment make the iA a well-equipped choice.
Scion FR-S
When the Scion brand ended, the FR-S became the Toyota 86. Regardless, the FR-S offers excellent driving dynamics. Only one engine was available: a 200-hp 2.0-liter flat-four. A six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic were the transmission choices. The manual shifts with a solid, no-nonsense feel, while the paddle-shift automatic is quick and responsive. The cabin is cramped and plasticky, but the FR-S is very agile, which endears it to enthusiasts.

Rolls-Royce Ghost Series II Price: $298,350 - $331,825
For those who desire sybaritic luxury and a spirited driving experience in the same ultra-pricey motorcar, the Ghost Series II is your answer. Under the hood topped by the Spirit of Ecstasy is a twin-turbo 6.6-liter V-12 good for 563 hp paired to a satellite-aided gearbox, which uses GPS data to read the roadscape ahead of you, anticipate your driving needs, and shift the transmission accordingly. The interior boasts sumptuous leather seating and handsomely crafted wood veneers.
Rolls-Royce Dawn Price: $343,875
Luxurious, exclusive, exquisite; take your pick of adjectives for the lovely Dawn and any one of them will suffice. Basically a Wraith coupe under the skin, the Dawn’s sheetmetal curves and swoops, making it—according to Rolls—the “sexiest Rolls-Royce ever built.” Inside there is room for four adult passengers; occupants will be dazzled by the gorgeous leather and acres of real wood trim. Under the hood is a 6.6-liter twin-turbo V-12 that makes 563 hp, so the Dawn is as fleet as it is sexy.

Audi S6 Price: $71,850
The S6 takes everything that’s right with the A6 sedan—elegant design, rich interior materials, and innovative technology—and adds a huge dollop of power. With a 450-hp, twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, the engine offers cylinder deactivation for improved fuel economy. All-wheel drive and an adaptive air suspension help to harness all that power, making it a blast to drive in all types of weather. It’s pricey, but few cars combine excellence at so many levels.
Audi S5 Price: $54,050 - $62,050
Quick, nimble, and subtly handsome summarize the stunning S5 regardless of body style. All S5s combine Quattro all-wheel drive with precise steering, adept brakes, and sharp handling. The coupe and convertible use a 333-hp supercharged 3.0-liter V-6. A six-speed manual is standard in the coupe, but the convertible’s exclusive seven-speed automatic is optional. A four-door S5 Sportback extends an already roomy rear seat; it packs a 354-hp turbo 3.0-liter V-6 and an eight-speed automatic.
Audi S4 2017 Price: $50,125 - $51,125
From the way it looks to the way it drives, the S4 is a blast to pilot, and we dig it. It’s an all-wheel-drive, sport-tuned version of the already excellent A4, powered by a supercharged 333-hp V-6. A six-speed manual is standard; a dual-clutch seven-speed automatic is optional. Interior and exterior styling is understated compared with some of its more extroverted competitors, and the S4 can get pricey when you start to add on the options. An all-new, more powerful S4 is due in early 2017.
Audi RS7 Price: $111,650 - $130,450
With a sleek, fastback body, 20-inch wheels and aggressive styling mods, the RS7 could get by on looks alone—but as an RS model, that’s not necessary. This bahn-burner packs a spectacular twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 that makes 560 hp, a performance-tuned eight-speed automatic, all-wheel drive, and a lowered suspension. For more power, the RS7 Performance makes 605 hp. While the six-figure price tag is not cheap, the RS7 is as close as it gets to an R8 supercar with four doors and a hatch.
Audi RS5
The huge air intakes are the first clue that the RS5 is no average beast, and they are certainly not the last. The meanest version of Audi’s sport coupe now has a twin-turbo V-6 instead of a naturally aspirated V-8. The new engine produces 444 hp, just shy of the outgoing V-8, but torque has increased to 443. On call to help transfer that power to the ground is Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system via an eight-speed automatic. We expect the new RS5 to be as expertly executed as its predecessor.
The new Audi RS3 2017
Take one look at the RS3 and you know it means serious business, from its large front air intakes to its massive tailpipes. And, with a 400-hp 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder under the hood, it has the muscle to back up its menacing appearance. Its seven-speed dual-clutch automatic routes torque to all four wheels; Audi claims the RS3 can rocket from zero to 62 mph in just 4.1 seconds. Sold in Europe as a hatchback—but coming here only as a sedan—the RS3 will go on sale in summer 2017.
