LAMBORGHINI MARZAL

LAMBORGHINI MARZAL

Top speed: 140 MPH
Although the Lamborghini Marzal is a concept car, it is very well known as being one of the most expensive cars ever produced to feature gull wing doors. The car made its debut in 1967 at the Geneva Motor Show, and was created to give Lamborghini an entry into the high-end car sports car market with four seats. The auto is powered by a two liter inline-six cylinder engine that is coupled to a five-speed transmission. Although the company would not go on to produce more Marzals, many of the design features included in the car were used on later models of car produced by the manufacturer. The Marzal is only known to have been driven once by Princess Grace and her husband.

BRISTOL FIGHTER

 BRISTOL FIGHTER

Top speed: 200 MPH
The Bristol Fighter is a niche sports car produced by Bristol cars between 2004 and 2011. The car features a coupe body along with gullwing doors. The designer of the auto is Max Boxstrom who became known for his work as a Formula One engineer. The car is powered by a front-mounted V-10 engine based on the Dodge Viper model that is modified to an overall rating of 515 lb-ft of torque and 525 horsepower. The Fighter S model of the car is further upgraded to a power rating of 628 horsepower. The Fighter was built with rear-wheel drive, and consumers had the choice between a four-speed automatic and a six-speed manual transmission. The auto’s zero to 60 MPH time is 4.0 seconds, and the vehicle’s top overall speed is 210 MPH.

BRICKLIN SV-1

BRICKLIN SV-1

Top speed: 118 MPH
The Bricklin SV-1 is one of the better-known sports cars sold that feature gull wing doors. The auto only saw a limited production run between 1974 and 1976, and was conceptually designed by Herb Grasse working for Malcolm Bricklin who had founded Subaru of America prior to this timeframe. The company was not able to produce the auto quickly enough to sustain a profit, and as a result, only 2,854 were produced. The SV-1 was originally intended to be a safer sports car with an economical price. Of all of the cars with gull wing doors, it is the only auto to include factory powered ones. The additional weight of the safety features added to the SV-1 resulted in a significant amount of weight being added to the vehicle that has a negative impact on its overall performance. The early models are powered by a AMC 360 V-8 with later ones shifting to the Ford Windsor V-8. The early models of the auto included a four-speed manual transmission, while all of the cars produced in 1975 and 1976 only included an automatic transmission.

DELOREAN DMC-12

DELOREAN DMC-12

Top speed: 88 MPH
The DeLorean DMC-12 is one of the most popular cars that have gull wing doors in the world. The auto was produced and sold on the American car market from 1981 through 1983, and it also featured a fiberglass underbody structure and chassis along with a stainless steel auto body. The car was featured in all three of the Back to the Future movies, and the first prototype of the vehicle was first unveiled in 1976. There are still more than 5,000 of the models still in existence today, and although the car could go to 88 MPH in the movies, the stock speedometer on the auto is limited to a maximum reading of 75 MPH.

MCLAREN P1

MCLAREN P1

When people think of electric cars, they don’t often think of speed — they usually think of them in terms of envirnoment, as of nice, silent, decent looking cars that are good enough, but not too impressive when it comes to power.  Therefore, McLaren P1 comes as a surprise. With a 903 horsepower engine, P1 is a powerful hybrid with a top speed of 217 miles per hour; if  you remove the inhibitor, it can reach speeds even higher than that. It hits 62 miles per hour in just 2.8 seconds, and 186 miles per hour in 16.5 seconds, which makes it faster than McLaren F1.

1965 DODGE DEORA CONCEPT CAR

1965 DODGE DEORA CONCEPT CAR

The 1965 Dodge Deora was originally built for the Detroit Autoramain 1967 and is one of the oddest cars ever created. Created as a unique hot rod, the car does not have doors, and would actually become the model for one of the original Hot Wheels toy cars. One of the unique features of the auto is the manner by which the driver enters the vehicle. Instead of sliding in through the windows due to the lack of doors, the front of the car cab opens similar to a Venus flytrap. This allows the driver to seat his or herself before closing the cab of the vehicle and taking off. The vehicle is powered by a 2.8 liter, Slant-6 engine and uses a three speed transmission for shifting gears. The car is still around, and was sold in 2009 at auction for more than $225,000 USD.

1942 OEUF ÉLECTRIQUE

1942 OEUF ÉLECTRIQUE

If you have never seen an egg on wheels, then the 1942 Oeuf électrique will definitely be one of the oddest cars that you have ever seen. The auto consisted of three wheels, and was powered by batteries during an age when gasoline was the predominant means to power automobiles. Paul Arzens from Paris, France, was the primary designer of the car, and he made his name by designing railway locomotives and painting before moving into the auto industry. The bubble of the electric egg was made of aluminum that was hand-formed as well as curved Plexiglas which was just starting to find adoption as a glass substitute throughout industry in this timeframe throughout Europe and the United States.

MAZDA NAGARE CONCEPT CAR

MAZDA NAGARE CONCEPT CAR

The Mazda Nagare Concept Car was first introduced to the public at the 2006 Los Angeles Auto Show. The auto definitely ranks as one of the strangest vehicles produced as it was part of an exercise in organic and natural car design to help guide the future of Mazda auto design. The Japanese translation of the auto name means “flow,” and the company design engineers used the vehicle to study the effect that motion had on the natural surroundings while creating the auto. The primary designer of the auto was Laurens van den Acker, and the Mazda Advanced Design Team who were located in Irving, California. The car is distinguishable by its extremely large windshield that sits at an extremely steep angle connecting to the top of the auto. The wheels of the car are extremely large and are wrapped into the wheel wells of the vehicle. This helps incorporate them as part of the car body, and are another one of the design features making the Nagare one of the oddest cars that you will ever see.

1936 STOUT SCARAB

 1936 STOUT SCARAB

The 1936 Stout Scarab is one of the oddest looking cars that you will ever see. The auto was designed by William Stout who had been employed as an aviation engineer focused on aircraft before transitioning to the automobile industry. Drawing on Stout Air Lines success with first introducing luxury and leisure into transportation through the introduction of in-flight meals and flight attendants into flights, Stout looked to mimic these successes in the auto industry. The Stout Scarab was designed to be a diner car on wheels driven by a powerful V-8 located in the rear of the stretched auto body. Ultimately the Scarab never took off in popularity due to its high cost, and only 10 were produced in the lifetime of the brand.

1932 FORD SPEEDSTER

1932 FORD SPEEDSTER

The 1932 Ford Speedster is one of the oddest cars of the end of the Model-T era in the United States. The car was created by company designer, Eugene Gregorie and Henry Ford’s son, Edsel Ford, and was extremely long and sat low to the ground. The Speedster included a flathead V-8 engine and even had a start button for the engine many decades before this would become a standard feature throughout the auto industry. The original concept for the flathead V-8 and ignition system had been discussed in concept several years earlier, but Ford held off on expanding production of vehicles with the technology for business reasons for several years.
