Mercedes-Benz 550 SL Mille Miglia 417 bows 2015

To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the production sports car win by a Mercedes-Benz 300SL in Italy's grueling 1955 Mille Miglia (1,000 mile) road race, the German automaker debuts in Geneva  a limited edition model called the "Mille Miglia 417" that will go on sale in the U.S. later this fall. The original 300SL that won its class in 1955 was piloted by American John Fitch and left the starting gate at 4:17 a.m. in the morning with co-driver Kurt Gessl aboard. Fitch SL's fifth overall finish and class victory has been overshadowed by the record run by Sterling Moss and Denis Jenkinson, which completed the 1,000 road race from Brescia to Rome and back in 10 hours. That duo's overall win came in a competition-only Mercedes-Benz SLR

The anniversary model is based on the 2015 Mercedes-Benz SL550 coupe equipped with a 429-horsepower twin-turbo 4.7-liter V8 engine mated to a 7-speed transmission. Primarily an appearance package, the Special Edition "Mille Miglia 417" is painted black like Fitch's 300SL Gullwing, but it's a matte finish with contrasting red on the front and rear spoilers, brake calipers and rims on the sport alloy wheels, which measure 19-inches in the front and 20-inches in the rear

Cabin highlights

Interior upgrades include AMG Line sport seats, black center console with contrasting red inlays and edging as well as headrests embossed and embroidered with "SL Mille Miglia." Red is also used to outline the door panels and arm rests, while red seatbelts contrast with the black leather seating. The sport steering wheel is wrapped in red and black Nappa leather. Other trim bits are finished in matte carbon, while the black floor mats are edged in red and embroidered with a "1000 Miglia" logo

The SL Special Edition "Mille Miglia 417" will be available as an SL550 in the U.S.  in the fall of 2015, and pricing will be announced closer to the market launch. Current starting price on the standard 2015 Mercedes-Benz SL550 is about $107,000

Toyota RAV4 2016

Eighth member of the automaker's ever-expanding gas/electric contingent, the 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid made its world debut in New York. This new greener variant was accompanied by other members of an updated/upgraded 2016 RAV4 family that will include a new SE trim grade.
Set to arrive in the fall, Toyota is aiming the 2016 RAV4 Hybrid at young active-lifestyle couples. While offering no specifics on the Hybrid Synergy Drive system that will be fitted to this compact crossover SUV, Toyota did say that in addition to earning superior EPA numbers, the new RAV4 Hybrid also will be quicker off the line and more powerful than its conventional RAV4 counterpart. The 2016 RAV4 Hybrid will be offered in XLE and Limited trim grades, both fitted with Toyota's On-Demand All-Wheel-Drive System with intelligence (AWD-i). In addition to six exterior colors including a new bespoke BLUE, the Hybrid variant will be available with unique 17-inch alloy wheels.
A fresher look and new features for all 2016 RAV4 models
To help enhance the RAV4's appeal in what's become the hottest segment in today's automotive market, Toyota has made a number of significant changes to the entire lineup. All versions feature more aggressively styled front/rear fascia treatments, revised rocker sills and new skid plate garnish elements along with new wheel designs and colors. The RAV4 remix also adds the option to step up to full LED headlights and taillamps.
Inside, the roomy RAV4 cabin gains new and more premium trim touches throughout complemented by detail upgrades like an additional front USB port and rear 12V powerpoint, reconfigured cupholders and a dedicated sunglasses holder. Front/rear parking sonar is standard across the board and all but the LE will come with SiriusXM All-Access Radio and a 3-month complimentary trial subscription -- although the entry-level model will now offer a Scout cellphone -- based navigation system. Other available new-for-2016 upgrades include a 4.2-inch multi-information display in the revised gauge cluster, 7.0-inch touchscreen for the Display Audio sound system and a 360-degree Bird's Eye View Monitor. The 2016 RAV4 also will offer the new Toyota Safety Sense system. Standard on the top-line Limited, it complements the existing Star System elements with a Pre-Collision/Pedestrian Pre-Collision System, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Alert, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and Automatic High Beams.
New RAV4 SE adds enthusiast appeal
Those seeking a RAV4 with more dynamic character will find it in the new SE which matches a sport-tuned suspension with a unique front bumper/lower grille, full LED lighting, 18-inch alloy wheels and available two-tone exterior treatment that pairs a Super White, Black Sand Pearl or Electric Storm Blue upper color with a Classic Silver Metallic lower body trim. Inside, the new RAV4 SE features the Limited's SofTex seat coverings and a black headliner while adding SE-spec instrument graphics and the 4.2-inch info display as well as steering-wheel mounted shifter paddles.
Specific packaging details as well as pricing and EPA numbers for the entire 2016 Toyota RAV4 lineup will be realesed closer to their actual on-sale dates.

Lincoln Continental

These days, Lincoln isn’t much more than a collection of rebadged Fords, but the Continental concept shows a way back to its past status as a real luxury carmaker.

Unveiled at the 2015 New York Auto Show, the Continental is a flagship sedan that would help restore Lincoln’s reputation if built. If you ever forget it’s a Lincoln, just look at the headlights and grille, which feature tiny repetitions of the brand’s logo.

On the inside, the Continental is just as luxurious as its classic predecessors. Standout features include 30-way adjustable seats, and a fully-reclining rear passenger seat that seems aimed at the Chinese market, where many buyers prefer to be driven rather than drive.

In a nod to efficiency, the Continental is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6. It’s part of Ford’s ubiquitous EcoBoost family.

Ford Expedition adds EcoBoost power and Platinum trim 2015

Getting its formal reveal on the eve of the DFW Auto Show in Dallas, Texas, the 2015 Ford Expedition boasts a fresher look, a more connected character, enhanced dynamics and a new 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine.  Continuing in standard and EL (119-inch/131-inch wheelbase) configurations, the 2015 Expedition models will offer a range-topping Platinum trim grade when it goes on sale this fall
While modest in scope, visual changes to the 2015 Expedition's fascias add more contemporary flair to the package. Up front, the soft cap is edgier, a look complemented by new lighting elements - including available LED fog lamps - plus a bolder lower valance treatment. The rear sports a redesigned liftgate and new chrome-tipped dual exhaust outlets. In addition to new colors that are specifically keyed to the XLT, Limited, King Ranch and new Platinum trims, the 2015 Expedition lineup also gets redesigned alloy wheels that range up to 22 inches in diameter

The cabin makeover on this 7/8-passenger SUV travels a similarly purposeful route. Key revamps consist of new 4.2-inch LCD driver information screens in the main instrument cluster and a restyled center stack to accommodate an 8.0-inch high-res color display for the Expedition's available SYNC with MyFord Touch infotainment/navigation system. Other standard/available tech highlights for 2015 include a 10-speaker/700-watt Sony premium audio system, Intelligent Access with push-button start, seven-color ambient LED lighting, a rearview camera and Ford truck apps to facilitate trailer towing and off-road driving. Going Platinum brings all of the above and more, including supple leather upholstery, power-adjustable pedals, Ford's radar-based Blind Spot Information System with cross-traffic alert and unique trim accents

For many, the most meaningful change on the 2015 Ford Expedition will be found underhood where the current 5.4-liter V8 gives way to Ford's well-proven 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 as sole engine in the North American market. While final figures on the popular twin-turbo/direct-injected engine have yet to be released, they'll at least match the 365-horsepower/420 lb-ft of torque it produces when fitted to an F-150 pickup. Both numbers handily exceed the 310/365 output stats of the current V8, and promise to add a good deal more snap to the Expedition's overall performance. The EcoBoost engine is also expected to deliver significantly better fuel economy in both rear-drive and 4-wheel drive models. While gear-changing will still be handled by a 6-speed automatic, for 2015 the transmission adds SelectShift manual-style capability

Although the 2015 Expedition's standard fully-independent suspension is largely carryover, it does gain more energy-efficient electric power steering that improves driver feedback across the entire speed range. The Expedition also will be the first Ford-badged product to offer the automaker's trick Continuously Controlled Damping (CCD) system as an option. The tri-mode (Comfort/Normal/Sport) CCD setup constantly reads and reacts to 46 different steering/braking/dynamic inputs. It alters shock absorber settings in milliseconds to minimize unwanted body motion and enhance overall ride comfort

Pricing, EPA figures and final equipment details for the 2015 Ford Expedition will be announced closer to its arrival in dealer showrooms

2016 Fiat 500X First Review

The 2016 Fiat 500X compact crossover SUV could very well be the mainstream hit the Italian brand has been looking for in the U.S. Conceived and largely developed here, it shares much of its underpinnings with the new Jeep Renegade compact SUV. The new 500X boasts a compelling list of features, a usefully sized package, and a competitive price, all wrapped in styling that puts it not just at the top of its class, but of the entire U.S. Fiat lineup
So, it's good, but there's one thing keeping us from getting a 500X tattoo. It's not enough to scratch the 500X off your shopping list, but it could send fence-sitters elsewhere

Features and Models

But let's circle back to that, and start on the most Italian thing about this new little crossover SUV: the style. Designed in Italy, the 500X looks like what Americans expect from a modern Fiat. Thankfully, the styling was influenced by the aggressively adorable little 500, and not the bigger and assertively goofy 500L. However, it's more than just a bigger version of its little brother, especially with the off-road-look trim you'll find on the Trekking and Trekking Plus models
Inside, the difference is even more pronounced. Where the 500 and 500L have chintzy-feeling interiors filled with hard plastic, the 500X's soft-touch surfaces on the dash and armrests, very good fit and finish, and a generally upscale feel belie the base Pop model's starting price of $20,900, including the $900 destination charge. The back seat fits three in a pinch, although tall passengers will complain about legroom, and the generous cargo area expands not just by folding the rear seats, but with a long-object accommodation thanks to the flip-forward front seat
That base Pop model comes standard with a 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder and a 6-speed manual transmission; it's the only way you can get a manual in this car. The rest of the lineup uses the 2.4-liter "Tigershark" 4-cylinder mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission (that combination is optional in the Pop). The Easy ($23,200) and Lounge ($25,750) models emphasize a more "street" look, while the Trekking ($24,000) and Trekking Plus ($28,000) both have an off-road-ready appearance, although the 500X isn't meant for the off-road duty its Jeep Renegade brother can handle. Everything except the Pop model is available with all-wheel drive for an extra $1,900, meaning a fully equipped Fiat 500X Trekking Plus will top $30,000

On The Road

Our test car during the introductory drive in and around Malibu, California was a mid-level Trekking with front-wheel drive. It came with the mid-level Uconnect system, with a 5.0-inch full-color display that didn't include navigation, but did have satellite radio, Bluetooth and USB inputs. To that was added the Trekking Collection 3 option package, adding dual-zone climate control, an 8-way power driver's seat, and heated front seats and steering wheel. The total price with destination was a reasonable $25,300. Additional options include a backup camera, a navigation system, and driver assist technologies such as forward collision mitigation and warning, lane-keep assist, and blind spot monitoring with cross-path detection. A Beats audio system, dual-panel sunroof, and leather interior are available on higher-end Lounge and Trekking Plus models
Quieter than most of its competitors, wind and tire noise are notably better than SUVs like the Mini Countryman. The 500X's switches and controls all have a good feel and a sensible layout -- we especially liked the user-configurable digital display between the gauges -- and the soft elbow rests on the doors and center console bin all help add to the refined feel. The 2.4-liter 4-cylnider engine sounds appropriately Italian, and with 180 horsepower it feels plenty strong
The 9-speed automatic is an upgraded version of what's in the Jeep Cherokee, Chrysler 200, and other Fiat-Chrysler vehicles. Mash the throttle to the floor and it downshifts quicker than in those cars, but it's still slower and harsher than competitors. All 500X models except Pop come with a Dynamic Selector knob that controls various drive settings. Move it from Auto to Sport and the transmission responds quicker and holds revs better, but it still needs another round of polish. Sport mode also stiffens the steering response and makes the engine more sensitive to throttle inputs. The other setting, Traction+, remodulates everything to increase traction when roads get slick

Stiff Legs

The Fiat 500X handles surprisingly well, acquitting itself quite well on the twisty roads in the Malibu hills with sharp electrically assisted steering and flat, controlled cornering. But that brings us to our biggest complaint about the 500X: Around town or on the highway the suspension is simply too stiff, and doesn't isolate the body from dips and larger bumps. Rather than floating over a medium-sized dip, the 500X bounces up and down uncomfortably. The same is true for mid-size and larger bumps, and you'll quickly discover just how many of those kinds of undulations are out there. While we like the handling, we think buyers are more likely to cruise around town rather than push their 500X to the limit on a mountain road. Slightly softer shocks would likely solve the problem, and since we drove pre-production vehicles, it's possible that the final suspension calibrations may change. Even if it stays the same, there's a good chance that those shopping at a Fiat dealership will expect more bite in their suspension, and that sportiness may be just what they're looking for
Based on looks, price, and value, the 2016 Fiat 500X has all the makings of a hit as an early entry into a rapidly expanding market segment. Even against competitors like the upcoming Honda HR-V and Mazda CX-3, the new Fiat 500X makes a good case for itself as an American Fiat. Stiff suspension or not, the combination of value and style will be hard to ignore

Lotus Evora 400 U.S. bound 2016

British sports car maker Lotus has taken the wraps off the next generation mid-engine Evora 2+2  and announced that following the European launch this summer, will hit the North American market in the fall as a 2016 model.  Called the Lotus Evora 400, it is the fastest production Lotus ever, according to the company. The 400 refers to the engine output, which sees the previous Evora S 3.5-liter V-6 fitted with a new supercharger that boosts it from 345 to 400 horsepower. Torque has been increased from 295 to 302 lb-ft with maximum torque available from 3,500 to 6,500 rpm

With a top speed of 186 mph, the Evora 400 takes just 4.1 seconds to accelerate from 0-60 mph and has beat the previous production car lap time set by the Evora S on the company's test track at Hethel, England, by 6 seconds. In addition to the engine upgrades, the 2016 Lotus Evora 400 features a new aluminum chassis, updated interior and lightweight composite body panels that give the car a new look

Faster and lighter

In addition to being faster than the model it replaces, it's lighter with the new design shaving 45 pounds from the previous model even though content has been increased. "We have always said that to make a car better, you must make it faster and lighter," said Jean-Marc Gales, CEO for Group Lotus. We have achieved this, of course, but we didn't stop there, as considerable number of changes in the interior, chassis, engine and body design have warranted emphatically the title of a new Lotus Evora

The new Evora 400 features new styling that includes a bolder face with larger cooling inlets and LED daytime running lights. At the rear, the Evora benefits from a new bumper, lightweight composite rear diffuser and a three-element wing. The car has a more aggressive stance and appears lower, wider and more planted on the road. Overall length has increased 1.4 inches and yet a shorter front overhang reduces the approach angle from 11.5 to 10 degrees

Cabin improvements

Among the upgrades to the interior, first and foremost, Lotus had made the Evora easier to get in and out of, thanks to narrower and lower sills as well as thinner inside door panels. All new sport seats are lighter, more aggressively bolstered and supportive. The new bonded aluminum chassis not only has thinner sills without sacrificing stiffness, but also allows for a slightly larger rear seating area that's 11 inches wider. The Evora 400 has three new trim levels including upgrades to full Alcantara or Scottish leather, each package featuring specific detailing

In addition to an all-new dash layout, revised instrument cluster and a lightweight forged aluminum sport steering wheel, the Evora 400 benefits from an all-new climate control system that provides greater airflow and more operator control. Other changes include the incorporation of a stop/start button and the introduction of a new high-end sound system. Lotus, which produces about 45 cars per week, will ramp production up to 70 per week to accommodate the demand for the Evora 400. Pricing will be announced closer to its launch date

Succeeding the Audi V8, and now in its third generation, the A8 has been offered with both front- or permanent all-wheel drive—and in short- and long-wheelbase variants. Lexus NX 200t and 300h Hybrid unveiled 2015

Slated to bow at AutoChina in Beijing, the 2015 Lexus NX will be the luxury marque's entry in the growing premium compact crossover market. Remaining true to the spirit of the Lexus LF-NX Concept presented last fall in Frankfurt, the production model brings a new level of visual intensity to a category that includes the Audi Q3, BMW X3/X4, Mercedes GLA-Class and Range Rover Evoque. In addition to offering naturally aspirated and hybrid powertrain choices, the NX also offer the division's first turbocharged engine. Here in America, we'll see three distinct variations on the theme, the turbocharged NX 200t, the NX 300h Hybrid and the enthusiast-oriented NX 200t F Sport

Youthful Design

The exterior styling of the Lexus NX displays an aggressively muscular character. The boldly proportioned spindle grille, dramatic body contours and sleekly swept roofline are set off with LED lighting front and rear while standard 17-inch or optional 18-inch alloy wheels fill its prominently flared fenderwells. Like other Lexus F Sport variants, the NX 200t F Sport steps up its basic in-your-face attitude with unique design flourishes to complement a performance-tuned suspension
The richly-appointed leather-lined cabin shares a similar approach, mixing hard metallic accents highlighted by a prominent metal frame around the center stack with numerous soft-touch surfaces - including thoughtfully padded knee bolsters on the forward section of the console. Here, too the F Sport offers unique upholstery and trim bits. The seating position in all NX models features a relatively low hip point that eases entry/exit and affords more headroom. Lexus indicates the new NX also will have a good deal of easily reconfigurable space for cargo as well as people

Two powertrain choices

Lexus also confirmed that U.S. versions of the NX will feature the same powerplants seen in the two previous LF-NX Concepts. The NX 200t/200t F Sport will be fitted with an all-new 2.0-liter/4-cylinder gasoline engine rumored to be making as much as 250 horsepower. The NX 300h is expected to pack the same 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle 4-cylinder gas engine and electric motor setup used in the Lexus ES300h, a combo that should continue turn out about 200 horses
Among the features promised in the NX are the division's first Wireless Charging Tray for mobile phones as well as a new Lexus Remote Touch Interface with a touch pad
The 2015 Lexus NX 200t, 200t F Sport and 300h Hybrid are set to arrive in showrooms later this year. Pricing will be announced closer to their actual on-sale date
