The Gumpert Apollo is a German sports car that entered production in late summer of 2012 featuring gull wing doors. The auto was first debuted at the Geneva Motor Show, and it is both street legal and track appropriate. Research for the vehicle started in the early 2000s, and the Technical Unversity of Munich and the Ingolstadt University of Applied Sciences assisted with the design, construction, simulations, and wind tunnel tests for the vehicle. The car is powered by a 4.2 liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engine that is coupled to a six-speed sequential manual transmission. The overall top speed of the car is 220 MPH making it one of the fastest cars with gull wing doors ever.

DE TOMASO MANGUSTA

The De Tomaso Mangusta is a sports car produced between 1967 and 1971 that became well-known for having gull wing doors over the luggage compartment and the engine. The car was originally built with a Ford 289 V-8 engine rated at 306 horsepower on the European market and with the Ford 302 V-8 rated at 221 horsepower on the American car market. The car features disc brakes on all four wheels, and other perks like power windows and air conditioning were on the leading edge of technology for the auto’s time. The car is known to be difficult to handle, and it has extremely low ground clearance. Today, there are approximately 250 of the original 401 produced still in existence.

The Melkus RS 1000 is a sports car that was popular in East Germany and features gull wing doors. The auto is powered by a mid-mounted Wartburg three-cylinder. The production variants of the vehicle used the 992 cc version of the engine; however, there were a number converted for racing that were upgraded to the 1200 cc version with a top speed of 130 MPH. This version of the auto also came with a sports carburetor that resulted in an improved horsepower rating from 90 to 118 HP for the vehicle. There were a total of 101 of the autos produced in Dresden, Germany between 1969 and 1979.

The Mercedes SLS is one of the better known sports cars with gull wing doors still found on the roads today. The auto was the first car to be fully designed by in-house engineers at AMG, and it was the designated successor to the McLaren. The auto was fully assembled by hand when in production to include the engine. The car first debuted in 2009 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, and was sold in both the United States and Europe during its production run. The auto was sold stock with rear-wheel drive, and the engine is a 6.3 liter V-8 mounted in the front middle portion of the vehicle. The SLS was sold with the transmission option, a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

The Autozam AZ-1 is a mid-engined sports car built between 1992-1994 and has gull wing doors. The auto was produced by Suzuki, but sold by the Mazda Corporation under the Autozam branding. This car is also known as Suzuki Cara on certain markets. The car is powered by a 657 cc turbocharged engine that is rated at 63 lb-ft of overall torque. Suzuki would also produce the same car; however, branded it the Cara and delivered slightly different engineering to the vehicle. There are models of the vehicle that were converted to left-hand drivers in other countries such as Canada and the U.K; however, the profitability of the vehicle limited its overall production to just two years.
