The DeLorean DMC-12 is one of the most popular cars that have gull wing doors in the world. The auto was produced and sold on the American car market from 1981 through 1983, and it also featured a fiberglass underbody structure and chassis along with a stainless steel auto body. The car was featured in all three of the Back to the Future movies, and the first prototype of the vehicle was first unveiled in 1976. There are still more than 5,000 of the models still in existence today, and although the car could go to 88 MPH in the movies, the stock speedometer on the auto is limited to a maximum reading of 75 MPH.

The BMW i8 features the auto manufacturer’s improvement on gull wing doors by upgrading to swan-wing ones. The plug-in hybrid is one of the most revolutionary on the market, and it seats four passengers extremely comfortably in a posh interior. The auto is powered by a turbo-charged three-cylinder combined with two electric motors that are rated at 357 horsepower. The top overall speed of the vehicle is 155 MPH, and it can go from zero to 60 MPH in just 3.6 seconds. The overall fuel efficiency rating of the auto is below average for a hybrid at 28 MPG (city) and 29 MPG (highway); however, it tops the list of all sports model eco vehicles for sale today.

The BMW E25 Turbo concept car was created by the auto manufacturer in commemoration of the 1972 Summer Olympics being held in Munich, Germany and featured gull wing doors. The car has a mid-mounted engine, and is powered by a turbo-charged version of the engine included in the BMW 2002 rated at 200 horsepower. The can go from zero to 60 MPH in slightly under 6.6 seconds, and its top overall speed is 155 MPH. There were only two of the automobiles ever produced and the auto’s theme was used by the manufacturer on the M-1, Z1, and 8-series of automobile.

The Porsche Tapiro is one of the most iconic cars with gull wing doors. The auto was produced as a fully functioning concept car for the Turin Motor Show in 1970, and it was designed by Girogetto Giurgiaro. The car features straight, crisp lines and an overall wedge shape. The auto was the 4th overall prototype created by Giurgiaro, and it is based on the Porsche 9146 chassis powered by a 2.4 liter flat-six cylinder engine. The car’s engine is 2400 cc in size and is rated at 220 horsepower when the engine is at 7800 RPM. The car is just shy of 160 inches in length and has a 96.5 inch overall wheel base. The car was purchased and driven by a Spanish industrialist until it was significantly damaged by protestors. Today, it can be found in the Giugiaro Museum in Italy.

Once it hits the show room floor, the Tesla Model X SUV will be the newest automobile sold on the market with gull wing doors. Although the Model X has seen delays for its release which was originally scheduled in late 2014, the auto is already expecting to be sold out for its first model year. The all-electric crossover will be sold with the same battery varieties that are being offered with the Model S sedan (these include the 60 kWh, 85 kWh, and 85 kWh Performance options). All variants of the Model X SUV will be sold with a dual-motor all-wheel drive (this is an option for the Model S). Fans of gull wing doors and emerging technology are already lining up to make the Model X SUV a success.
